The 14th European Conference on Surface Crystallography and Dynamics (ECSCD-14) was held on May 4-5, 2021 as a virtual event. Initially planned and organized to take place in May 2020 at Eibsee, Zugspitze, Germany, it was postponed to 2021 and changed in its format due to the pandemic situation in Europe.
With approximately 90 people constantly attending the talks, we consider that the conference has been a very successful scientific event. We are particularly grateful to the invited speakers, who shared their exciting results triggering lively discussions after the talks. Please note that some of the talks presented at the conference are available online (see “Scientific Program”); do not hesitate to share the link with your colleagues, who missed the chance to join us on May 4-5.
We are looking forward to meet you in person at the ECSCD-15 coming hopefully quite soon.

The ECSCD-14 will be held on May 4-5, 2021 as a virtual event.
ECSCD-14 will have a reduced program: Several selected tutorial and invited talks will be organized in two sessions on May 4th and 5th.
After registration (starting on April 12th, 2021), online attendance of the conference will be free of charge.

Dear participant of the ECSCD-14,
we deeply regret that we have to inform you today that ECSCD-14 will not take place as planned, but will be postponed to 2021.
This decision was made by the local organization committee (and confirmed by the ECSCD scientific board) and is due to the very dynamic spread of the Corona virus SARS-CoV-2 and the travel and quarantine restrictions put in action by the national governments and authorities. We hope for your understanding for this decision.
We were very much looking forward to this event, since you and your registered contributions have enabled us to put together an excellent scientific program. If you wish, you can download the (suspended) program from our web site.
Please note that ECSCD-14 is not cancelled but postponed. We plan to stick to the original program as far as possible, and therefore hope very much that you will be able and willing to join us for rescheduled event as well. At present we are negotiating with the Eibsee hotel about finding an adequate date for rescheduling ECSCD-14. We will certainly keep you up to date.
Some very important information on the refund and cancellation procedure
1. We will refund the registration fees as soon as possible, please be patient since this may take some time.
2. Please do not forget to cancel your accommodation with Eibsee hotel before 05.04.2020. All of you who have booked their rooms with Eibsee hotel directly have to cancel this booking themselves. Unfortunately, there might be a cancellation fee applying to your room reservation. At present the situation is as follows: By order of the authorities of the state of Bavaria the Eibsee hotel has been closed (as basically all hotels in the region). At present it is unknown whether or not this ordered closure continues into May. If this is the case, there will be no cancellation fee. But if the Bavarian authorities allow re-opening of the hotel before 04.05., there will be cancellation fee of 20% of the actual costs. Precondition for this rather moderate fee is cancellation of the booking before 05.04.2020. If you miss this date the fee will increase to 70% !
3. Regarding your travel expenses we are very sorry that we cannot offer any financial compensation. Regarding flights and train tickets, please try to get your ticket refunded from the corresponding train company or airline. In many cases, special reimbursement programs were announced. Deutsche Bahn, e.g., is refunding the full price, if the journey is no longer possible due to the corona virus. Many airlines have similar reimbursement programs, in particular since most flights have been (or will be) cancelled anyway.
4. In case you need an official letter of cancellation, please contact us via e-mail.
We would again like to stress that we deeply regret the need to postpone the conference. We hope for your understanding, and look forward to seeing you at ECSCD-14 in 2021.

12.03.2020 ECSCD14 and the Corona Virus COVID-19
Dear participant of the ECSCD-14,
Since the Corona virus SARS-CoV-2 and the associated COVID-19 disease are spreading in Europe and the world, many large events hosting several hundreds or thousands of people are cancelled at present, partly by instruction of the authorities. With this we would like to inform you about our plans and measures, in order to make it easier for you to plan your own journey.
At the moment, we still expect the conference to take place as planned, and we are continuing with its organization.
However, at the same time the organization committee carefully monitors the situation. We will follow this strategy until approx. April 2, 2020. This date is suggested by the cancellation policy of the conference hotel. Shortly after this date the cancellation fees for both the event organization and the hotel rooms you have reserved will increase significantly (four weeks before arrival), causing us to seek a decision before that time. We recommend that you postpone your detailed travel planning (in particular the booking of not refundable tickets) until this date, if this is still possible.
In any case, please note that in the unfortunate case that the conference cannot go ahead as planned, we are aiming for a postponement of the ECSCD-14, not a complete cancellation. We still hope that this will not be necessary.

We are delighted to announce the distinguished guest lecturer Prof. Dr. Hans Peter Schmid, Head of the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT-Campus Alpin), and his lecture on General and regional aspects of climate change scheduled for the after-dinner session on Wednesday, May 6th at 8PM.

Accompanying persons policy: We are able to accommodate a limited number of accompanying persons in the hotel, and offer a dedicated package for them to join the social program, see below. Please contact us as soon as possible if you wish to bring any accompanying person.
We offer a complete package for accompanying persons for a price of 380€. This includes three dinners (Monday 04.05, Tuesday 05.05, Wednesday 06.05), three lunches (Tuesday 05.05, Thursday 07.05, Friday 08.05), the conference dinner (Thursday 07.05), and the excursion to the Zugspitze including lunch (Wednesday 06.05). Please note that this price corresponds to the actual costs of the package. We were able to reduce the conference fee for full (scientific) participants below the actual costs, as we receive financial support from Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and industrial sponsors, however, this is of course not possible for accompanying persons.
Alternatively, it is possible for the accompanying persons to select some or all lunches and dinners in the hotel à la carte. These extra costs have then to be handled directly with the hotel. If the accompanying persons want to join for conference dinner and excursion, we recommend to book the package described above.

The abstract submission is extended until 25.01.2020. Please note that the number of rooms available is strictly limited as the hotel is overbooked for the season. We therefore strongly recommend early booking. The rooms will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
